Avaaz.org CLIMATE ACTION FACTORY – Barcelona and Copenhagen

Creative Youth-Powered Action for our Climate

The UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen, which holds the promise of a strong, fair, and binding global climate treaty, could be among the pivotal events in our lifetimes: a worldwide triumph, or a tragedy of missed opportunity. The mission of the Avaaz Copenhagen Climate Action Factory is to maximize the possibility of achieving a fair, binding, ambitious global climate treaty at Copenhagen, and to raise the expectations and demands of the global public that governments must achieve such a treaty.

Ten Action Factory Fellows -- activists living and working with  the Action Factory through the end of the Copenhagen summit -- will unleash their creative energy on this unparalleled political problem, with Avaaz providing them with organizing resources, strategic direction, and basic needs in exchange for effective climate action.

Since June 2009, the Avaaz Action Factories in DC and Berlin have carried out hundreds of creative actions in the US and across Europe, mobilized tens of thousands of youth and Avaaz members, directly interacted with scores of decision-makers, and earned hundreds of media hits to propel forward this end.

Action Factory work will include nimble and rapid-response high-profile media stunts, but may also include longer-term projects such as working with Avaaz’s climate volunteer base. Activities will be tightly coordinated with Avaaz’s global climate campaign priorities and Action Factory fellows will work closely with and at times be directly managed by Avaaz’s climate campaign staff.

The Copenhagen Action Factory will work towards a fair, ambitious, and binding global climate treaty at Barcelona intersessional talks in early November and in Copenhagen itself through several core mechanisms:

·  direct pressure on negotiators

·  shaping the media narrative

·  helping mobilize Avaaz members globally to take effective political actions both online and offline

·  serving as an advance logistical and campaigning team in Copenhagen proper for the four weeks between Barcelona and Copenhagen

To apply, send a resume and cover letter to taren@avaaz.org, and use the subject line “Copenhagen AcFac coordinator application.”

Fellowship

The Action Factory is also seeking to hire 10 paid fellows for this project, with an application process to be circulated soon.

Previous Actions and Projects

See http://actionfactoryeurope.tumblr.com/ and http://dc.actionfactories.org/ to learn more about the actions we have carried out to-date.

The Action Factory program is focused on political advocacy to influence governments in the global climate negotiations through direct pressure and communications. While Fellows are free (and encouraged!) to use their free time for nonpolitical climate projects -- such as building longer-term youth climate movement infrastructure, general awareness-raising, or personal lifestyle changes -- these activities are not the focus of the Fellowship. This program is being created in response to a political emergency of lack of ambition and will to confront the climate crisis in the most-emitting countries. Copenhagen Action Factory projects will be more actively and intensively managed by Avaaz staff than other Action Factory iterations, and fellows must be prepared for and indeed welcome frequent strategic pivots based on the most-up-to-date political intelligence.
